Overview

Bee & wasp removal in the West Valley

Africanized honey bees are widespread in southern Arizona, and you can’t tell them apart from regular honey bees by looking. What’s different is how they defend a colony: more bees, faster, and farther from the hive. That’s why a swarm or hive should never be sprayed with a garden hose, knocked down, or worked on from a ladder. Keep people and pets away and call a professional.

It helps to know what you’re looking at. A swarm is a cluster of bees hanging on a branch, wall, or fence, usually in spring. It’s looking for a new home and may move on. An established hive is different: steady traffic in and out of one spot, like a roofline gap, a wall void, a meter box, or an irrigation valve box. Hives have comb inside and don’t leave on their own.

Wasps are their own problem. Paper wasps build umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, patio covers, and play sets, and they grow every week they’re left up. Bryce identifies what you have, removes or treats it, deals with comb in walls so it doesn’t melt or attract new bees, and treats old nest sites so they don’t rebuild.

Know the signs

Signs it’s time to call

A swarm has landed

A cluster of bees hanging from a tree, wall, or fence. Often passing through, but not something to stand near.

Traffic to one spot

Steady bee traffic into a roofline gap, weep hole, meter box, or valve box means a hive is establishing.

Buzzing in a wall

A hum you can hear through drywall or a ceiling, sometimes with bees showing up indoors.

Wasps at the eaves

Paper wasp nests over doorways, patios, pool areas, or play sets that grow larger week by week.

The process

How Bryce handles it

  1. Triage

If bees are actively stinging, get people and pets indoors first. Stings can be medically significant: call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or 911 for a severe reaction or many stings. Then call us to schedule removal. Tell us about kids, pets, and sting allergies so the visit is planned around them. A texted photo speeds up the quote.

  2. Identify

Swarm, established hive, or wasp nest. Each gets a different approach and an honest quote for it.

  3. Remove or treat

Swarms and reachable hives are removed. Wall and roof hives are treated, and the comb is addressed so it doesn’t rot or re-attract bees.

  4. Prevent the rebound

Old nest sites and entry gaps are treated or sealed, because bees and wasps return to the same spots.

Questions

Straight answers about bee & wasp removal

Don’t see your question? Call or text (623) 363-3124 and you’ll get Bryce, not a call center.

Are the bees in Arizona Africanized?

Africanized honey bees are widespread in southern Arizona, and they look the same as other honey bees. The safest approach is to treat any wild swarm or hive as if it’s Africanized. Keep your distance, keep kids and pets inside, and have a professional handle it.

A swarm just landed in my yard. Will it leave on its own?

Swarms often move on within a day or two once scouts find a new home. If it’s near a door, a play area, or the pool, or if the bees start building comb, don’t wait. Text a photo to (623) 363-3124 and Bryce will tell you what he recommends.

Why does comb need to come out of a wall?

When a hive inside a wall dies off, the honey and wax can melt, stain drywall, and attract other bees and pests to the same spot. Wall and roof hives need the comb addressed, not just sprayed, so the problem doesn’t come back.

What should I do if I get stung?

Move away from the area right away, since bees release a scent that draws others. Stings can be medically significant: call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or 911 for a severe reaction or many stings. Then call us so the hive or nest can be handled.

Can I knock down a wasp nest myself?

Small, brand-new nests sometimes get knocked down by homeowners, but larger nests, nests in hard-to-reach spots, or anything you aren’t sure is wasps rather than bees should be handled by a pro. We also treat the nest site so wasps don’t rebuild there next week.
